Canine Companions for Independence

Canine Companions for Independence is the largest national nonprofit organization provider of assistance dogs in the United States. Canine Companions proudly provides assistance dogs to those in need absolutely free of charge. With the use of hundreds of volunteers throughout the nation, and an elite staff of professionals, Canine Companions continues to be a leader providing exceptional dogs for exceptional people.

Founded in 1975, both the National Headquarters and the Northwest Regional Training Center are located on the beautiful Jean and Charles Shultz Campus in Santa Rosa, CA. The Northwest Region embraces the states of Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Northern Nevada, Northern California, Oregon, Washington and Wyoming.

The Puget Sound Chapter of Canine Companions for Independence serves the Northwest Region of Washington State for counties in the Seattle-Metro area. Our Chapter is put together by an enthusiastic group of volunteers who Puppy Raise for Canine Companions; providing the puppies at the age of 8 weeks to about 18 months the chance to learn about their world through socialization and 30 basic commands. When our volunteer role is complete, we lovingly return the puppy to the Regional Training Center in Santa Rosa where advanced training will begin.

The Puget Sound Chapter is also made of amazing individuals who are recipients of a Graduate assistance dog from Canine Companions. An inspiring group of Handlers add valuable insight, wisdom, and knowledge about the needs and responsibilities of the assistance dog to the Handler. The partnership between a Handler and Puppy Raiser in the Puget Sound Chapter ultimately increases the quality of training to the Canine Companions puppy in training.

Teamwork, fun social outings, life long friendships with like-hearted people, and dedication help produce a fantastic Puget Sound Chapter.  Visit the Contact Page to learn how to contact a representative in our Chapter, or at Canine Companions for Independence.
